Finding Your Sanity

I've been unemployed for some time now, despite applying for any vaguely interesting job within 30-ish minutes of my home.

It's a bit maddening having to scroll through five or six different job sites that have stupid algorithms that can't recommend me jobs I actually want. Just the other day, one of them recommended me a child psychologist role open near me. I have no degree in psychology, nor a certification, and I definitely don't have an interest in working with children all day. I figure 5 months and only getting 3 face-to-face interviews means no employer wants me. I'll still occasionally scroll a job site because unemployment demands I at least look for a job, but at this point I think I'll try to make my own money, without some overworked, dullard hiring manager to approve of me (they never will, I don't have 5+ experience nor am I an easy-to-exploit teenager). So I've begun the hobby of making polymer clay jewelry. While I don't have all the supplies yet, I have the basics I need to create earrings. I just ordered a Dremel with buffer attachments so I can get that baked clay polishes and shiny. I figure if I perfect the process enough, I'll be able to sell them online, or maybe even at the local market my city hosts one a week in the spring and summer months. Here are a few earrings I've made so far.

It's a fun craft, and you end up with a finished product fairly quickly. While my writing (and certainty my job search) takes much longer than it takes to create a pair of earrings. Writing isn't very linear, it takes time to craft a story, imagine the details, and multiple drafts and rounds of feedback to get a finished product. But something like clay earrings, there are plenty of videos and tutorials on how to do it, and a countless number of color combinations, and designs you can craft. Once I hone my skills in making earrings, maybe you'll see them for sale someday. It's not a bad way to make a little extra cash, it's something I enjoy doing after all. And maybe if I find ways to make money doing a million different creative things, I'd be able to pay rent.
